For the wildest shows out on TV, there’s no better place to look than Animal Planet. It’s feel-good content, too, because so much of it is focused on the praise and conservation of wildlife. This post outlines some of the top current shows on Animal Planet as well as the platforms you can use to watch it.
Animal Planet serves up content about wildlife and domesticated animals on both cable networks and streaming platforms. Current shows include a variety of content to appeal to the many interests of animal lovers and wildlife activists alike. You can find Animal Planet on certain TV plans from Spectrum, DIRECTV, Cox, Optimum, Suddenlink, and more.
Animal Planet is a television channel primarily dedicated to content about wild animals and domesticated pets. The best part about the shows you find on this channel is that they present a wonderful reminder that there is good in the world (not everything is a dumpster fire). Although some of the shows naturally include a bit of light thrill here and there, the content is generally wholesome and uplifting. Even the shows that promote natural conservation make space for a better future if we put in a little effort to keep our world safe.
The shows listed in this post showcase some of the series that are currently running on the channel. Here, you’ll find shows about crocodile showdowns, law enforcement keeping the peace, pit bulls with something to prove and more. There’s something here for everyone!
Crikey! It’s the Irwins
For any viewers who had the pleasure of seeing Steve Irwin skillfully (but gently) wrangle alligators on his show “The Crocodile Hunter,” watching his family carry on his legacy will be heartwarming. In this show, Irwin’s wife, Terri, and his children, Bindi and Robert, go on international missions in the name of wildlife conservation. For example, one episode features the Irwins’ trip to Africa to meet an all-female anti-poaching squad and local wildlife. Other episodes show the family overseeing their beloved Australian Zoo and wildlife refuge by rescuing infirmed animals, welcoming adorable baby beasts and, of course, facing off with a few more crocodiles.
Lone Star Law
In Texas, game wardens protect both man and beast across more than a quarter million square miles. In this show, you can expect to see any of the following: loose gators, high-speed chases, poaching busts, illegal drug discoveries, missing person searches and more. If you enjoy cop reality shows and animals, “Lone Star Law” has the right mix for you. It has enough tension, action and attention to local wildlife to keep you tuned in.
North Woods Law
If you’d prefer to see law enforcement battling cold weather while they do their jobs, then watch “North Woods Law.” This show stars the conservation officers of Maine and New Hampshire who are charged with keeping the peace according to local wildlife law. They’re still protecting humans, of course. Some cases that they handle include rock climbing accidents, moose causing traffic jams, missing hikers, rabid foxes, stolen lobster traps, mountain rescues, speeding snowmobiles, and hunting or fishing violations. Check out this show for a taste of the New England wildlife scene!
The Aquarium
Viewers who feel drawn to the creatures under the sea will love “The Aquarium.” This show catalogs the day-to-day life of the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, GA. There’s a lot to see in their 10-million-gallon facility: lovable sea lions, endangered coral species, sweet beluga whales, scarily intelligent octopi and more. This particular aquarium also makes special efforts to help regrow the endangered African Penguin population by breeding and releasing them into their natural habitat. In this show, you’ll find an endearing and feel-good message about the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere, the animals who inhabit it and the humans who care for them.
Pit Bulls and Parolees
After a life of cherishing the loyalty she received from the strays she took in as a child, Tia Torres makes it her life’s mission to give a second chance to two misunderstood groups: pit bull dogs and parolee ex-convicts. In the show “Pit Bulls and Parolees,” Torres runs Villalobos Rescue Center, which is the largest pit bull rescue facility in the country. After saving pit bulls from perilous situations of abuse, neglect or homelessness, she and her team retrain them and pair them with a parolee in need of some unconditional love. By helping others find a higher quality of life through fulfilling relationships, Torres hopes to help both man and beast find peace, redemption and a second chance.
The Zoo
As the largest metropolitan zoo in the country, the Bronx Zoo faces many challenges. Of course, it really can’t be easy to maintain a large group of animals right in the middle of the Concrete Jungle. The caretakers at this facility keep their fauna friends thriving through concentrated efforts in rehabilitation, illness treatment, endangered animal support, rehousing of illegal animals, research and more. If you have ever wanted a peek into how a zoo keeps everything together, this is the show for you.
